Appointed by the court as an attorney for the child, the guardian ad litem (GAL) conducts an independent investigation of the child’s situation and makes a recommendation to the court for the custody arrangement in the child’s best interest.
The court appoints a GAL in divorce matters when parents cannot reach a custody or visitation agreement, as well as in juvenile and domestic relations district court, abuse and neglect, and adoption matters.
